Behind the Scenes with SCC Builds: A Day in the Life of a Carpenter and Dad

Morning Routine Early Start Every day at SCC Builds starts early, with the sun barely up and the world still quiet. I'm usually up by 5 AM, my first task being to check my schedule for any meetings or site visits. The mornings are precious; it's when I sneak in a few moments with my wife and kids, giving them a kiss and reminding them how much they mean to me. And, of course, no day begins without my beloved coffee. It’s the fuel that kick-starts my day and sets the tone for everything that follows.

Starting the Workday First Tasks By 6:00 AM, I’m on the road, picking up my crew. Our drive to work isn’t just a commute; it’s our time to strategize and bond. We stop for a coffee, chat about the day ahead, and share a few laughs. Those who don’t ride with me join us at the site for our morning safety and expectations meeting. We lay out the day’s goals and make sure everyone knows their role. As a seasoned carpenter with 20 years of experience, I turn every task into a learning opportunity. Building a house isn’t just about nailing boards together; it’s about understanding the math, planning, and craftsmanship behind every nail and board.

Team Interaction Daily Briefings Our team meetings are like a well-oiled machine. Each morning, we gather for a quick briefing to discuss the day’s objectives, any potential hiccups, and ensure everyone is on the same page. This isn’t just about work; it’s about building a team that communicates effectively and supports one another.

Project Management Juggling Projects Managing multiple projects is akin to juggling flaming torches – exhilarating but requiring constant attention. Project management software is my lifeline, helping me keep everything organized and on track. With it, I can ensure that every project meets its deadlines and stays within budget, all while maintaining the high standards our clients expect.

Client Interaction Staying Connected Client relationships are the heart of SCC Builds. We keep our clients in the loop with regular updates and open communication. Weekly progress reports and site walk-throughs at various stages of the build are standard. It’s not just about building a house; it’s about building trust and satisfaction with our clients.

Challenges and Solutions Overcoming Obstacles Every construction project comes with its own set of challenges – from weather delays to supply chain issues. But at SCC Builds, we see these obstacles as opportunities for innovation. With a positive attitude and a problem-solving mindset, we tackle each challenge head-on, turning potential setbacks into learning experiences.

Balancing Work and Family  Balancing work and family is a juggling act, especially with young kids. My daughter Fiona and son James are curious about my work, and sometimes they even help out with small tasks. My wife Erin is incredibly supportive, handling the books and administrative side of the business. Whenever I'm feeling overwhelmed or need backup, she’s just a phone call away.

Sustainable Practices Going Green Sustainability is a core value at SCC Builds. From using eco-friendly materials to incorporating energy-efficient designs, we strive to minimize our environmental impact. Recently, we completed a project featuring a green roof, which not only looks great but also helps with insulation.

Evening Routine Winding Down After a long day, winding down with family is essential. Dinner is often a hearty meal made from ingredients grown in our garden or sourced from local farms. Evenings are for unwinding – sometimes around a campfire, enjoying the serenity of our farm. It’s a chance to reflect, relax, and recharge for the next day.

Personal Reflections Job Satisfaction What I love most about my job is the satisfaction of seeing a client’s dream come to life. Running SCC Builds has been a journey filled with challenges and rewards, allowing me to combine my passion for construction with my desire to give back to the community. It’s about creating spaces where families can grow and memories can be made.
